The Gold Coast

The Gold Coast of Chicago encompasses the crème-de-la-crème of the city’s real estate properties. This opulent neighborhood is a must-see for anyone with an interest in historic Chicago luxury homes, as well as, serious buyers and | or investors for whom location and refinement are primary concerns.

The historic mansions that populate this area were developed in the years immediately following the Great Chicago Fire, when the heart of the city required major reconstruction. Ever since, the Gold Coast has been the address of choice for Chicago’s wealthiest citizens. Alongside the older, massive houses are towering apartment buildings that offer residents fabulous, panoramic views of Lake Michigan. While no doubt decidedly exclusive, these rental apartments help ensure that young people, as well as, those persons in state of transition, lend a vitality and freshness to the neighborhood.

Astor Street is the veritable headquarters for the most extravagant Chicago luxury homes, including the original Playboy Mansion. As you can imagine, the Astor Street market at any given time is rather limited, but you are always free to walk around the area and admire the wealth of renowned architectural styles. (Fans of the Queen Anne and Romanesque styles will be especially pleased.) Noteworthy, is the fact that the city of Chicago has declared hundreds of these homes historical landmarks and a quick look down Astor Street will surely provide reason enough to know why.

The Gold Coast is home to some of the most exclusive shops in Chicago. Here, such posh, high-end shops and designer fashion labels the likes of: Prada, Jil Sander and Hermès can be along the elegant Oak Street. (Of course, it is also only a hop, skip, and jump from the Magnificent Mile which extends from Michigan Avenue at Oak Street to the Bridge.) There are also a number of excellent restaurants. Old school steak houses and institutional bars are concentrated around Rush Street, although lighter fare is also available for those watching their waists. Local and national celebrity sightings are far from uncommon; in the last year alone, reports have placed Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Bacon, Michael Keaton, Michael Jordan, Donald Trump and Julia Roberts and George Clooney in the area.

As the premier neighborhood for Chicago luxury homes, don’t look to the Gold Coast for bargains. The market is almost always exclusive, regardless of real estate trends nationally (or those within the rest of the city). Realistically, you should expect to pay top dollar for any property in this area.

Of course, on the positive side, it is highly unlikely that your property will ever devalue. In fact, the opposite is true; in all likelihood, your Gold Coast home will be an excellent investment, as well as, a wonderful, conveniently located place to live.
